It might not take long for severe weather to ramp up across parts of southeast Iowa. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK has issued a Mesoscale Discussion focusing on the early threat this morning and afternoon.
In the first hours of this severe weather event, large hail appears to be the primary threat. A watch could be posted in the next 1-3 hours for this possibility. But attention remains on the treat of tornadoes later in the day. All of this depends on the movement of the cold front that’s cutting the state in half right now from north to south.
Timing is also an issue as storms could develop a little earlier in the afternoon than usual. Either way, eastern Iowa is getting the sun it needs and could set up for a substantial severe weather outbreak.
