A good set up is taking shape for severe weather to the northwest of Iowa. That threat is expected to move into the state later this afternoon and especially into the evening hours. The Storm Prediction Center is now forecasting storms to develop sometime after 3pm, especially in eastern South Dakota.
These storms are expected to affect northwest Iowa. As a result, the SPC is monitoring the area for a severe weather watch. Whether it’s tornado or severe thunderstorm remains to be seen, but my initial guess is we’d see a tornado watch or two over the first 6 hours of this severe weather event.
As storms move further into Iowa, the rest of the state faces a risk of strong winds and heavy rain during the overnight hours. We’ll keep an eye on things and update you as need when/if a watch is issued.
