Yes that’s right, after several weeks without any threat of strong thunderstorms, the Storm Prediction Center has posted a slight risk for severe weather on Wednesday. The risk includes the western half of Iowa.
This is certainly not the kind of severe weather risk to get too excited about. As some in Cedar Rapids learned Saturday afternoon, it is not hard to produce hail this time of year.
Because of the abundance of cold air aloft, hail producing storms will be common in any convection that fires up this week. A similar threat is already posted for southwest Iowa on Thursday. Again the risk, outside of hail, is minimal. But the threat is nothing for chase teams to be concerned about.
We will continue to monitor the threat, but at this time a chase appears highly unlikely.
