Did you think you were out of the woods? Were you making plans for the fall? Well it’s not here yet and the cooler temperatures seem like they are a lifetime away right now. A heat wave is settling into the Upper Midwest. As you can see from the graphic above, much of the area, including all of Iowa, is under either a Heat Advisory or an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING.
All of this is from a stalled out weather pattern that will drape a strong high pressure to the south and west of the area. What this means is warm air will bubble up from the south and there will be nothing to stand in its way. On top of the heat, this also means the chances of any meaningful rain are remote at this time. That will likely further aggravate drought conditions across Iowa, something we’ll get an update on later this week.
Iowans are no stranger to this kind of heat so I won’t bore you with all of the dire warnings and safety tips. Instead I’ll keep it simple. You know you are not designed to operate in this heat for long periods of time. So if you must, you have to stay hydrated. And if you begin to feel overwhelmed or weak, it’s time to stop whatever you’re doing. Heat related deaths ARE preventable, and we need to keep it that way! Stay cool!
