Little has changed in the running forecast over the past 24 hours. After a day of experiencing sleet, all eyes remain on a big warmup followed by the potential for a very active weekend. Models continue to bring in a good system as early as Friday, with the best chances for organized storms Saturday and Sunday.
There is still some concern over placement and timing and I believe that will not go away until Friday arrives. One other concern I have about this system is its potential to be a rain maker. While severe weather will remain a possibility, there is a potential for the stalled out system to become nothing more than a heavy rain producer.
Luckily (unlike last year), this is something that eastern Iowa can handle right now. Near drought conditions in recent weeks are a far cry from the heavy snow melt and spring rains we saw this time last year.
At any rate, preparations are being made all week to prepare for another chase season. There are a number of new tools we will utilize in an effort to bring the people of eastern Iowa the information they need, faster. I hope to make an announcement on what those new weapons will be in the coming days. Until then, enjoy the warmup and here’s hoping it lasts!
