“Risky” Weekend

After weeks of inactivity and cold weather, showers and thunderstorms are pegged to make a big return to eastern Iowa this weekend.  The only question now is when, where and in what form.  Let’s start with Friday…

Severe Weather Risk for Friday, April 24, 3009

A large portion of Iowa is now at risk for severe thunderstorms for Friday.  But there’s some doubt as to where the storms will fire, and when.  Early indication are that this could be a late night event.  Might turn out to be some good lightning video, but otherwise the primary threat appears to be hail and damaging winds.  This morning’s model runs appear to want to begin development in north central Iowa early in the evening.  If that’s the case the prospects of a chase remain.  Now on to Saturday…

Severe Risk for Saturday, April 25, 2009

Saturday originally was expected to be a dry day in eastern Iowa, but now as you can see a risk is posted.  The highest risk at this time for severe weather remains confined to areas south and west of Iowa.  I am concerned that leftover convection from Friday night will prevent storms from developing on Saturday.  On a personal note that’s a good thing.  Financial constraints are really taking their toll on my preparations this week and a day off of chasing would be appreciated. And finally, Sunday!

Severe Risk for Sunday, April 26, 2009

Sunday is a wild card.  With four days out (meteorologically speaking) before this event, the exact timing and placement remains a little in doubt.  But this could remain the biggest of severe weather days as this is when we will finally see frontal passage at some point in eastern Iowa.  After Sunday things should quiet down a bit in eastern Iowa, but for the next 72 hours-plus, there will be much to keep a close watch of.  As we prepare to stormchase be sure to check back for updates and information as we prepare to make the jump into the live blogging and streaming world.
