President Obama Thursday declared a major disaster exists in the State of Iowa and ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms, tornadoes, and straight-line winds during the period of April 9-10, 2011.
Federal funding is available to State and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms, tornadoes, and straight-line winds in the counties of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Ida, Monona, Pocahontas, and Sac.
This declaration comes after an outbreak of severe weather nearly a month ago which struck several communities, including Mapleton. At least one tornado that destroyed a farm residence was rated and EF-4 tornado with winds of around 170mph.
There is a growing threat that severe weather may return to Iowa next week. We’ll have more on that impending threat later today.
