Periods of Heavy Rain May Lead to Flash Flooding in Iowa

Iowa Flash Flood Watch

Slow moving low pressure over the central plains will combine with plentiful moisture to deliver several rounds of showers and thunderstorms to much of the area, beginning tonight and continuing into Thursday evening. Any storms that develop may be slow moving and produce very heavy rainfall. Most locations are expected to pick up between 2 and 3 inches of rain through Thursday evening, but with localized amounts in excess of 7 inches possible where storms track across the same areas. With soils already quite wet from recent heavy rain over the past month, flooding of streams and rivers may develop faster than normal.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. Those living or recreating near waterway should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
