Minimal Threat for Severe Weather Today

day1otlk_1300But it’s a threat just the same.  The Storm Prediction Center has posted a slight risk for portions of northern and eastern Iowa today as a frontal boundary approaches the area.  As it moves through Iowa, strong to severe thunderstorms may develop capable of producing large hail, strong winds and possibly an isolated tornado.

Overall this is a pretty low risk for severe weather as the very warm air mass over Iowa so far is preventing thunderstorms develop.  While a few storms may fire later today and tonight, this atmospheric cap should prevent any major outbreaks here in Iowa.  The better chance for severe weather exists in areas of Illinois today.

Although the risk is not high, we’ll monitor the situation and bring you any updates if needed later today.
