Breaking Weather:

Messy Monday

TempOur snow from today is now pushing out of the eastern portion of the state. Snow totals ended up from 1 to 4 inches of light fluffy snow across the area. Once the snow passed, you may have noticed that it became sunny. In fact, temperatures this afternoon  ranged from the teens in far eastern Iowa, to the upper 50s across western Iowa!  We will catch a break from the winter weather for Sunday with temperatures ranging from the middle 20s in eastern Iowa, upper 20s to near 30 across central Iowa, and low 30s across the western portion of the state. However, this will be a short lived break as the next storm will move in early Monday morning.

As it stands right now all of our computer models are on board with another winter like weather system affecting Iowa on Monday. This will bring a variety of precipitation types across Iowa, including sleet, snow, and freezing rain. Depending where you are located in the state will depend on what type of precipitation you will see.

As of now it looks like snow will start to push into western Iowa around the 3 AM time frame. The snow will continue to push eastward across the state with it possibly becoming heavier as it does. The heaviest amounts of snow at this time look to be in northeast Iowa where moderate accumulations are possible. Lighter snow amounts will be seen across the rest of Iowa. There will also be the possibility of freezing rain and sleet. The areas that will be most prone to seeing this will be the southern and southwest half of Iowa. If freezing rain does occur like some models are showing, it could accumulate enough to where it would make things very slick Monday morning. The graphic shows the areas where freezing rain is possible. Anywhere shaded in green is prone to the icy mess.

We will continue to monitor this storm system as it draws closer as it could make the Monday morning commute very difficult and very slippery. We will have another update on this storm system come tomorrow with possible snowfall amounts, and ice amounts. Once the storm passes by, the weather will then turn sunny and much more mild. Highs for Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the 40s and 50s across the state. If you want a more immediate escape from winter, we would suggest taking a flight to Florida! Until then, keep checking back to the Iowa Storm Chasing Network for the very latest.
