On this date in 1870, a snow storm with strong winds impacted portions of Iowa and Minnesota from March 14-17. More than a month later the Estherville Vindicator newspaper coined the term ‘blizzard’ to describe this storm, making this the earliest known published use of the word blizzard as a weather term.
