DEBRIEF: Strong Winds Produce Scattered Damage

As expected, a strong line of thunderstorms rolled across southeast Iowa and into Illinois on Saturday, producing some large hail and some strong wind gusts.  This did cause some power outages and some scattered damage, but fortunately nothing too serious.  One bit of good news was the abundant rainfall that came with this storm system.  Rain that was badly needed across an area experiencing moderate drought conditions.  So overall the storms were more than welcome to area farmers.  Time will tell if its enough to break the current drought as Iowa’s corn heads into its pollination period.

As for the storms, they did provide some gorgeous views along the leading edge.  My thanks to storm chaser Paul Brooks for snapping these photos in Alpha, Illinois.  This shelf cloud brought some very strong wind gusts with it.  Paul reports gusts up to 64mph as the storm passed over.  Thanks again for the pictures Paul and a reminder to you that you can always submit your storm photos to [email protected]
