With the threat coming into better view, we are seeing a threat of a full fledged severe weather outbreak across Iowa. The are under a tornado risk has expended slightly after a tornado watch was issued for portions of northern Iowa until 8:00pm this evening. It’s expected storms will begin to fire along a warm front draped across that area, To the left you can see the current risk area for tornadoes this afternoon and evening.
As this outbreak plays out, we should see a strong complex of severe thunderstorms moving across the state. In portions of northwest and central Iowa, all modes of severe weather are possible. But by this evening, the threat should shift to a strong damaging wind event in portions of central and eastern Iowa.
You can see this in the graphic to the right showing the greatest risk area for strong wind gusts. This is something we’ll keep a close eye on later tonight. We are monitoring all of this right now and plan to launch our live coverage as soon as the conditions warrant.
