12:00pm UPDATE: Here Comes the Cold Front

Iowa is baking today.  Baking under the hottest temperatures of the year.  Those conditions are ahead of a cold front expected to be the focal point of explosive severe thunderstorm development today.  And once again this threat comes during the all important Memorial Day Holiday.  The greatest threat for an outbreak of severe weather exists in northwest Iowa, eastern Nebraska up into portions of western Minnesota.  Storms could fire both at the “triple point” in Minnesota and along the cold front just west of Iowa.

All modes of severe weather will be possible today, but the greatest threats will come from very large hail and widespread, damaging winds.  The best opportunity for tornadoes will come in western Iowa, eastern Nebraska along a narrow corridor near the cold front.

With a rather strong cap out there, it appears that storms in many places might hold off until very late in the afternoon or the evening hours.  Even so we’ll monitor the latest developments and bring you updates as watches are inevitably issued and storms get going.
